Image
Reshma Qureshi, a 19-year-old Indian acid attack survivor who also actively campaigns for the #EndAcidSale movement, on Thursday walked the runway at New York Fashion Week, in what she called a life-changing experience after wowing the audience with her catwalk and her beauty despite the acid attack. Reshma's brother in-law attacked her with acid with the help of his friends who pinned her down in 2004 and she lost one of her eyes in the process. “People have the tendency to look at acid attack survivors from one perspective and I don’t want them to look at them like that anymore,” she told the AFP after the show.  “I feel really good and the experience was great,” she said in Hindi through a translator, according to The Guardian. I feel as though it has definitely changed my life. I do feel brave." Reshma who wore a cream and floral gown by Indian designer Archana Kochhar on Thursday also  said “I want to...

An Oscar for Jackie Chan

Image
When I heard the news on Friday that Jackie Chan was to receive an honorary Oscar, I'll admit my first fleeting thought was: "Jackie Chan? Oscar?" But then my sense of fair play took over. Why not Jackie Chan? Since the Academy made the Governor's Awards (as they are appropriately called) a separate thing from the Oscar telecast, they have turned into something kind of glorious. Many cried foul at the time, saying that this was ghettoizing the awards, and simply a way for the Academy to shorten the ceremony. That may be true, but it has allowed the recipients their own time (albeit untelevised) instead of a quick five minute's bum's rush off the stage. It has also done something else--it has allowed recipients who don't fit what the general public might think of lifetime achievement award recipients. The Kennedy Center Honors, for example, goes to the creme de la creme, and in film goes to only major actors and directors. This year, ...

Blazing Saddles

Image
My opinion of Blazing Saddles , Mel Brooks' 1974 comedy, has changed over the years. For one thing, I found it inferior to Young Frankenstein , released the same year, because Blazing Saddles seemed like it contained everything but the kitchen sink, and didn't know how to end. For another, as a proper white liberal, the use of the "N" word offends me. But, as Brooks has said, you can't have a movie without that word. In this Gene Wilder memorial period I watched it again the other night and enjoyed myself. It does have an ending, and a rather clever meta-one, with Wilder and Cleavon Little going into the Chinese Theater to watch how the movie ends, and then Little telling Wilder he's going "nowhere special," and Wilder saying he's always wanted to go there. Also, I've come to grips with the racist parody--Brooks did the same thing with Hitler. When you make fun of something, it lessens its power. For those too young to h...

Photos: Jealous white woman posts photos of her boyfriend with Kenyan women, calls them 'monkeys'

Image
A crazy white woman by the name Luli Kiity has left many shocked after she posted photos of her ex-boyfriend with his new girlfriend who is Kenyan, calling them all sorts of bad names on Facebook. She then posted another photo of her ex with his new girlfriend and another Kenya lady, referring to the ladies as Monkeys. This, of course, did not go well with some of her followers as they attacked her calling her ugly and lashing out at her for referring to Kenyan women as monkeys. See more of her posts and responses from Kenyas below...
